California man pulled from waters off Salt Pond Beach


HANAPEPE – A California man remains in critical condition after he became distressed while snorkeling off Salt Pond Beach in Hanapēpē at approximately 6:30 p.m. on Saturday.
Bystanders had pulled the man to shore and were administering CPR when firefighters arrived on scene.
According to witness reports, the 55-year-old man was snorkeling in calm water when he began to have difficulty breathing.
Firefighters and medics continued CPR as they transported the patient to the Kaua‘i Veterans Memorial Hospital Emergency Room. He was then medevaced to Queen’s Hospital Saturday night, where he remains in critical condition.

One lane of Puhi Road to close for four months; only southbound traffic allowed on the roadway starting June 27

PUHI – The public is advised that the first phase of the Puhi Road Rehabilitation project will kick into high gear next week. Traffic in the area will be impacted.
Starting Monday, June 27, one lane of Puhi Road will be closed for four months. During the lane closure, only southbound traffic traveling away from Kaumuali‘i Highway will be allowed on the roadway.
Northbound motorists will be directed to take a detour that follows Kaneka Street and Nuhou Street to Kaumuali‘i Highway.
Motorists should seek alternate routes, follow all traffic control signs and allow extra time to get to their destinations.
The $3.6 million project is expected to be completed early next year weather permitting.
The project will include full-depth reconstruction using Portland cement to support the heavy truck traffic on the roadway. The project also includes the installation of sidewalks and bike lanes, as well as drainage improvements.

911 line not in service, for emergency service call Police Dispatch

LĪHU'E – The County of Kaua‘i’s 911 line is down until further notice. Anyone needing emergency assistance should call Police Dispatch at 241-1711.
The cause of the outage is not yet known, but the issue appears to be affecting phone lines statewide. County officials are working with Hawaiian Telcom to restore phone service as soon as possible.
Updates will be given as information becomes available.

Man dies of self-inflicted gunshot wound at Līhu‘e Walmart, no others reported injured

LIHUE – Police have confirmed that a Kilauea man died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the Walmart parking lot in Līhu‘e Monday morning.
His identity has not yet been released.
According to a preliminary report, the man was sitting in a parked vehicle near the store’s Garden section when he shot himself at approximately 10:30 a.m.
No others were reported injured.
Police, firefighters and medics responded to the scene and secured the area.
The victim was taken to Wilcox Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
An autopsy is pending and the incident remains under police investigation
